PICKS OF THE MONTH
The SOUND ELEMENT is led by Australian composer and sound designer Ekrem Eli PHOENIX.
The music of Sydney-based composer has been described by the press as “risk-taking and other worldly, bordering on performance art.” Much of his work is concept-driven and explores voice, language and contemporary performance practice.
A native of Istanbul, Ekrem relocated to Australia in 2005 and has since been an active member of the Australian creative community both as an artist and an educator. As an avid researcher and young academic, he completed his PhD degree in composition at Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2016, under the supervision of Dr Damien Ricketson. His career so far features collaborations with The Song Company, Ensemble Offspring, Force Majeure, Belvoir Street Theatre, Bell Shakespeare, Opera Australia, and Centre of Creative Research into Sound Arts Practice at University of the Arts, London.
Ekrem’s works have been performed in venues like Sydney Opera House, Melbourne Recital Centre, St Mary’s Cathedral, Cockatoo Island and Campbelltown Arts Centre. ‘Sonolith #1 – Universal Declaration of Human Rights’, for solo-piano, opened Aurora New Music Festival, while ‘Some Echo Still’ commissioned by the Song Company toured Australia in 2015 and was performed at Canberra International Music Festival. Hi 2012 solo percussion piece “and we chart the topography of a moment” premiered at Sydney Opera House performed by Claire Edwardes.
In 2013, Ekrem composed and performed an endurance piece of 172 hours titled ‘Hermitage’. While isolated inside Currie Harbour Lighthouse on King Island, he performed continuously from sunrise till sunset for 15 consecutive days. Blurring the lines between performance and living, Hermitage was filmed and audio recorded in its entirety. The resulting 14-hour documentary can now be viewed online and is currently in development as a gallery installation.
A MODART Young Composers’ Program participant and acclaimed for his experimental works, Ekrem is also an award-nominated composer of film, theatre and dance. His stage credits include Food, The Astronaut, Yellow Moon, The Kiss and Cut for which he received a nomination at Sydney Theatre Awards.
Ekrem is the founder of The Sound Element and is the resident composer at Murmuration, a Sydney-based integrated performance company creating works alongside artists with and without disability.
