ABOUT

The music of composer Ekrem Eli PHOENIX has been described by the press as “risk-taking and other worldly, bordering on performance art.” Much of his work is concept-driven and explores voice, language and contemporary performance practice.

Ekrem has since been prolific in Australian arts scene both as a composer, performer and an educator since 2005. He completed a PhD degree in composition at Sydney Conservatorium of Music, under the supervision of Dr Damien Ricketson. His career features collaborations with Gravity & Other Myths, The Song Company, Ensemble Offspring, Force Majeure, Belvoir Street Theatre, Bell Shakespeare, and Centre of Creative Research into Sound Arts Practice at University of the Arts, London.

With works performed in venues including Sydney Opera House, Melbourne Recital Centre, St Mary’s Cathedral and Chamäleon Theatre in Berlin, his recent collaboration ‘Out of Chaos’ with Gravity & Other Myths had its world premier at Adelaide Festival, and won a Helpmann Award for Best Physical Theatre Production.

As a career highlight so far, in 2013, Ekrem composed and performed an endurance piece of 210 hours titled ‘Hermitage’. Isolated inside Currie Harbour Lighthouse on King Island, Tasmania, he performed from sunrise till sunset for 15 consecutive days, blurring the lines between performance and living. The resulting 14-hour documentary can be viewed online.

Critically acclaimed for his innovative, experimental works, Ekrem is also an award-winning composer for film, theatre and dance. His credits include HIRO - The Man Who Sailed His House, Food, The Astronaut, Cut, Days Like These and now Out of Chaos.

Between 2015-2018, Ekrem was the resident composer at Murmuration, Sydney's first integrated performance company creating works alongside artists with and without disability. Concurrently, Ekrem also works at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney, supporting patients with cancer and heart ailments as well as palliative care.
